Conductor

Spencer Down

Spencer is the driving force behind Docklands Sinfonia. He was inspired to set up a symphony orchestra in the Docklands by his grandfather – who worked as a shipwright in the docks and introduced him to classical music.

As well as being Musical Director of Docklands Sinfonia, he is Artistic Director of the BASBWE (British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles) London Festival, Musical Director of the Kew Music Festival and Associate Conductor of the Junior Guildhall Symphony Orchestra, where he also heads up the brass department.

Spencer has taught conducting at the Royal Academy of Music summer school and has recently designed the Trinity Guildhall euphonium diploma syllabus.

Passionate about educational work, Spencer is a mentor for Music for Youth and has conducted members of both the London Symphony Orchestra and Scottish Chamber Orchestra in educational projects.

He has appeared on Channel 5’s ‘Milkshake’ coaching presenter Naomi Wilkinson to conduct and was a first round judge on BBC2’s ‘Classical Star’.

Under his leadership, he has also established the Kew Wind Orchestra as one of Britain’s leading amateur wind ensembles winning multiple national and international awards. Spencer is also the musical director of the professional ensemble Pioneer Brass.
